On the 9th of December Kate Forbes MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and the Economy, announced that the licensed trade and hospitality businesses would continue to benefit from business rates relief in 2022/2023.
The Retail, Hospitality and Leisure relief is now available under The Non-Domestic Rates (Coronavirus Reliefs) (Scotland) Regulations 2022 and allows for eligible premises to benefit from 50% relief on business rates payable, which is available for the first three months of the 2022/23 financial year. The total amount of relief available is capped at £27,500 per ratepayer (not per property).
This relief was applied automatically in 2020/21 by each relevant billing authority, with applications for subsequent additional relief required in 2021/22. As rates demands are now being received, the 2022/23 relief must be applied for all relevant properties, up to the cap, via respective local authority Non-Domestic Rates websites.
The relief is technically subject to state aid equivalent rules and is capped over the last three fiscal years (the current 2022/23 year and previous two accounting years) at broadly £340,000 (subject to fluctuations) however the previous two years’ rates reliefs should be disregarded for this purpose.
